Being the most aggressive of the three dwarven brothers, Fafnir was the easy choice for his father to guard the treasure laden home they lived in. Upon being presented with a cursed ring (as payment for the murder of their brother Otr) the two brothers killed their father out of greed in an attempt to have the treasure for themselves.
Fafnir then took the form of a dragon and breathed poison onto the land surrounding his father’s house which prevented people from coming anywhere near the home and all its treasure.
Fafnir was eventually killed by Sigurd, the great hero of the Volsunga saga, after Sigurd was presented with the re-forged sword of his father by Fafnir’s brother Reign. It was only after conversing with Odin’s ravens that Sigurd learnt that Reign intended to kill him and keep all the treasure for himself, so Sigurd killed Reign, ate the heart of Fafnir and bought as much of the treasure home with him as possible consequently cursing his own family.
A cautionary reminder on the power of greed and how it can easily manipulate us all
