Son to the legendary Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, Ivar The Boneless is considered one of the most famous Viking leaders in history. The history of his name "The Boneless" is shrouded in myth as some believe he suffered from brittle bone disease (hence the name) while other accounts suggest he was so skillful on the battlefield and moved in such a way that he obtained the title of "boneless".
What is not up for debate however is that Ivar was considered an extremely cruel and unforgiving warlord. Evidence of his cruelty can be found through the revenge killing of King Aella, the man responsible for the death of Ivar's father, Ragnar. Ivar invaded England with the largest army in recorded history, the invasion was so large that the English simply referred to it as "The Great Heathen Army".
News of the invasion reached King Aella who tried to flee but was easily captured by the Ivar's army. Unsatisfied with simply killing Aella, Ivar subjected the king to the "Blood Eagle" a torture method that involved cutting open the back of the subject and pulling their lungs out through the wounds.
