Fenrir, the monstrous wolf embodies strength, ferocity, destiny, and inevitability. The reason why Fenrir was greatly feared amongst the gods was that he killed the chief god of gods - Odin the Allfather. Fearing Fenrir’s strength and knowing that only evil could be expected of him, the gods bound him with a magical chain made of the sound of a cat’s footsteps, the beard of a woman, the breath of fish, and other occult elements.
Fenrir represents savagery that ultimately cannot be controlled, even by the gods. Although they subdue Fenrir with Gleipnir, the wolf will eventually grow large enough to break his bonds and kill Odin. The wolf is widely recognized as a symbol of wild ferocity.
