Son of Odin and Frigg, Baldur was arguably the most beloved of all the gods. Considered a generous, courageous and kind deity, it was of concern to all when Baldur began to have disturbing dreams involving his death.
Racing to the underworld to consult with a seer, Odin learnt that Baldur’s dreams were indeed visions of his future. Revealing the news to the gods back in Asgard, Frigg raced across the cosmos obtaining an oath from every entity not to harm Baldur in any way.
Unfortunately Frigg missed one entity, which she believed too small and innocent to cause any harm to anyone; mistletoe. Upon learning this Loki fashioned a spear out of mistletoe and tricked the blind god Hodr into throwing it at Baldur to “test his invincibility”. Piercing the god through, it instantly killed Baldur.
Being foretold as the first event of Ragnarok, the gods were panicked at what had happened and sent a messenger to Hel to try and obtain Baldur back from the underworld. Unwilling to release Baldur from the underworld, Hel struck a deal stating if every entity in the cosmos wept for Baldur, she would release him from her realm.
Indeed everything did weep for Baldur…all except for the giantess Tokk (who was Loki in disguise) who coldly said “Let Hel hold what she has” And so Baldur was condemned to remain in Hel’s darkness, dampness, and cold; never again to grace the lands of the living.
