Knowing of the terrible prophecy concerning the 3 children of Loki (Jörmungandr, Hel and Fenrir), the gods began the task of keeping the monsters at bay. Jörmungandr was thrown into the ocean left to circle Midgard while Hel was relegated to the underworld. It was determined however that Fenrir was not to be let out of the sight of the gods, as he inspired the most fear of all.
The gods decided to bind Fenrir in chains with the first two chains being forged by Thor himself, both of which were broken by the beast. After these failed attempts the decision was made to send a messenger to the realm of Svartlefheim, home of the dwarves, to create a bind that could hold Fenrir, thus the creation of Gleipnir from the Sons of Ivaldi
Created from the “the noise of a cat's footfall, a woman's beard, mountain roots, the sinews of a bear, a fish's breath, and the spittle of a bird” the gods used the chain to successfully bind Fenrir and bound he stayed…until Ragnarok.
